Drawing from Life: Sketchbook Exercises / Line & Value
Drawing ONE – “Contour Shape / Positive & Negative Space”
· In your sketchbook create a 5x5 box
· Using HB Pencil
· SELECT One object
1. Using only line, NO SHADING or INTERIOR LINES, draw the object while looking both at the object and the paper.
2. Concentrate on the contour outside edge of the object as you determine the details of the objects form and the proportion of the
object as a whole.
3. Hint: focusing on the area might be easier if you close one eye to “visually flatten” the image
4. Color in the NEGATIVE space around your object with a 6B pencil, filling the 5x5 box
5. Your final drawing should resemble a silhouette or cut-out of the object in which the area around the object is dark.

Drawing TWO – “Contour Line Drawing” · In your sketchbook create a 5x5 box · Using HB Pencil · SELECT One object (different from drawing 1) 1. Using only line, NO SHADING, draw the same object while concentrating on the contour lines that make up the form and all the details of the areas within the object. 2. Include as much detail as possible in your image while considering proportion of the object as a whole. |

Value Scales Handout: Smooth & Crosshatching
Directions:
1) Using your drawing pencils and color pencils to create different and distinct value shifts from light to dark in each of the boxes provided. 2) Illustrate an understanding of the two shading techniques listed below: smooth gradation of value, hatching/cross- hatching in each of the two different media (pencil & colored pencil). When creating the PENCIL scales show use of the entire set of pencils and select ONE color with black & white to complete the COLOR pencil scale. |
Drawings THREE & FOUR: Shapes into FormsDirections:
Using your drawing pencils, demonstrate your understanding of drawing and shading a sphere and a cone. Draw one image using smooth shading and the other image using crosshatching to define value changes in the form. Pay particular attention to the contour of the shape as you shade to create the illusion of form.
