Photogram
OBJECTIVE:
Students will take in-class portrait portraits of each other in the studio and use those images as a negative for use in the darkroom. Utilizing the negative portrait of themselves and additional objects that vary in opacity and reflect their personal interests students will create a final collage-style portrait composition printed onto photo paper.
VOCABULARY:
Photogram - type of contact print, made by placing objects, instead of just a negative, on a piece of light-sensitive material and exposing it to light. Any object varying in size and opacity can be used to come between the light source and the sensitive material. Opaque objects will block the light completely leaving a hard-edged silhouette, whereas transparent or translucent objects like glass or plastic will bend the light. 2-dimensional objects such as cut paper, drawings, or magazine clippings or 3-dimensional objects with interesting shapes such as crystals, paper clips, etc. can be used.
