Alternate Assignment to Studio Workshop Field Trip
Objective: This is a two-part project. First, research a studio photographer of your choice (it can not be your aunt who takes photos on the side) and answer the following questions relating to their background and techniques. Additionally, you will need to collect 3 different lighting situations from any type of print media and identify the direction and number of lights you think were used to create the scene/mood of the image by placing arrows on/through the image that indicate direction.
PART I
1. Choose a Studio Photographer.
Optional Suggestions are listed below if you are stuck:
Annie Leibovitz Susan Stripling
Yousuf Karsh Cliff Mautner
Diane Arbus Taryn Simon
Irving Penn Carrie Mae Weems
Mary Ellen Mark Steve McCurry
2. Write a 1-2 page paper with the following criteria:
· Biographical information
o Including how the artist got started in his or her career/ education or relevant experiences
· Choose two different photographs (in studio examples from your selected artist) to discuss
o Include printed copies of each photograph within the paper as you discuss the following…
1. Explain the lighting set up of each photograph. (This information can be found via Google- ’artist name’ lighting.)
Questions you might ask yourself.... Is it natural lighting? Direct lighting from the side? Were there multiple sources of light?
2. Explain how the lighting influences the conceptual meaning of the photograph. How does lighting create a “Mood”?
3. Explain what you can take away from the artist’s use of lighting and how you can incorporate it into your own studio lighting assignment.

PART II
1. Find 3 print advertisements, images from a different portrait artist, or images from an internet search that you think were shot in a
studio situation. These images should not be from your selected artist.
2. Draw arrows with a marker (so we can see it easily) that show the direction in which you think the lighting is coming
from….remember that the lit side is OPPOSITE the shadow side.
